
As of February 20, Brampton no longer charges the $300 annual fee for its Residential Rental Licensing (RRL) program.
The program was created as a way to ensure that rental units met safety and maintenance standards. But many landlords saw it as unfair, arguing that it punished those who already followed the rules while illegal rentals continued to operate under the radar.
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown has been vocal about the need for stricter oversight of rental properties, particularly basement and garden suites. According to Brown, as many as 100,000 people are living in illegal rental units across the city, and complaints about these units are among the most common issues the city receives.
By waiving the fee, officials hope more landlords and property managers will step forward and register their properties, helping to create safer, regulated housing options for tenants.
The RRL program currently applies to rental properties with four or fewer units in Wards 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7. Unregistered landlords and property managers risk fines of up to $1,200.
