A recent Gallup survey reveals that 36% of Americans consider real estate the best long-term investment, surpassing stocks, gold, and savings accounts.

Some context may help to shed light on this surprisingly high number.

As a CNBC article points out, "long-term investment" and "real estate" can mean different things to different people – and it doesn’t have to mean buying a whole property. Investors can also choose real estate investment trusts (REITs), real estate crowdfunding, or private equity real estate. Each option offers unique benefits and opportunities for investors with different amounts of capital to spend.

For traditionalists, investing in real estate may still mean purchasing a house, and with good reason. Paying down a mortgage builds equity and capitalizes on property appreciation, while renting out a property creates a stream of passive income.

But being a landlord requires a significant time and financial commitment compared to other investments, which means those who go down this route may also seriously consider hiring a property manager.

The Gallup survey suggests a robust appetite for real estate, despite high home and mortgage prices. Property managers should keep marketing efforts strong, targeting both existing property owners interested in rental income and potential new homeowners ready to invest.
